Why We Love National Play Outside Day (And You Should Too!)

☀️🍃👣 First Saturday of Every Month | #PlayOutsideDay

As a mom of three, I know firsthand how quickly the days fill up—with school schedules, therapy appointments, work meetings, and a never-ending snack list. But I also know this: when we step outside, everything shifts. Our mood. Our energy. Our connection to each other.

That’s why I’m a big fan of National Play Outside Day—a monthly reminder (the first Saturday of every month!) to shut the laptop, put down the laundry, and just play outside with our kiddos.

Why Playing Outside is Pure Magic

Let’s be honest, sometimes it’s easy to let the day slip by inside. But outdoor play doesn’t have to mean planning an elaborate nature scavenger hunt or hiking a mountain. It can be as simple as sidewalk chalk in the driveway or blowing bubbles in the backyard.

Here’s why getting outside matters:

🌞 It recharges everyone’s batteries. Sunshine + fresh air = natural mood booster.

🧠 It gives our brains a break. When we're overwhelmed (hello overstimulation!), a quick change of scenery helps reset the day—for kids and grown-ups.

💪 It’s sneaky exercise. Running, climbing, jumping... it's all good for growing bodies—and it burns off energy in the best way.

🎨 It unlocks imagination. One stick becomes a magic wand. A puddle becomes a potion. Outside, there are no limits.

👫 It’s social, even without screens. Tag, hide and seek, building forts—kids connect, communicate, and learn to play together.

20 Easy Outdoor Play Ideas (No Pinterest Perfection Required)

Whatever the weather or season, there’s always something fun to do outside. Here's a list of simple (and sensory-friendly!) ways to celebrate National Play Outside Day:

  1. Take a walk around the block and play “I Spy.”

  2. Head to a nearby playground and try a new slide.

  3. Set up an obstacle course with pool noodles and chalk.

  4. Toss a ball, a frisbee, or even water balloons.

  5. Go on a nature treasure hunt.

  6. Run through the sprinkler in your pajamas. Why not?

  7. Draw your favorite animal in sidewalk chalk.

  8. Collect leaves or pinecones and turn them into art.

  9. Camp out in the backyard (or living room if it rains!).

  10. Build a fort with whatever you can find.

  11. Go fishing or just dip your toes in a lake or river.

  12. Watch clouds and tell stories about what you see.

  13. Ride scooters or bikes through the neighborhood.

  14. Stargaze and look for constellations.

  15. Rake a big pile of leaves and jump right in.

  16. Build a snowman or snow fort (when the season calls for it!).

  17. Visit a new park or trail you haven’t explored yet.

  18. Try a picnic in the backyard—even with takeout!

  19. Create a nature-themed sensory bin from things you collect outside.

  20. Revisit your own childhood favorites—kick the can, red rover, hopscotch.

Let’s Make It a Habit

The more we get outside, the more our kids will crave it too. So even if it's just 15 minutes between errands, a walk after dinner, or a weekend park date—every little bit counts. Bonus: it helps burn off that wild energy and promotes better sleep (cue the happy dance!).
