Why Family Game Night Matters More Than Ever (Especially When Your Kids Become Tweens & Teens)

If you've been around Doodlebugs for a while, you know I don't bring products into the store just because they're trendy.

They have to mean something.

They have to solve a problem.

And most importantly… they have to be something I'd actually use with my own kids.

Lately, I've found myself thinking a lot about how quickly my kids are growing up.

Kirk is a teenager.

Karson will be 12 before I know it.

Kira isn't my little girl anymore either.

Somewhere between appointments, homework, friends (& girlfriends), phones, social media, and just...life... it becomes a little harder to get those moments where everyone is together without distractions.

As moms, we spend so many years teaching our kids to become independent.

Then one day we realize they're becoming exactly that.

And while that's something to celebrate, it also made me ask myself something that hit me right in the heart:

How do I stay connected with them as they get older?

The Back-to-School Reset Isn't Just for Bedtimes

Every August we all start talking about routines again.

Earlier bedtimes.

Homework.

Lunches.

Schedules.

Morning checklists.

But this year, I decided there was one routine I wanted to protect just as much as all the others.

Family time.

Not the kind where we're all sitting on the same couch staring at different screens.

Real connection.

Laughing.

Talking.

Competing.

Cheering each other on.

Making memories that don't require Wi-Fi.

Because those moments become fewer if we don't intentionally create them.

The Trip That Changed My Mind

A few weeks ago I headed to the Atlanta Market to find new products for Doodlebugs.

This time, though, I had a sidekick.

Karson came with me.

Honestly, I expected him to tolerate walking the market because...well...he loves me.

I figured we'd look at toys, maybe grab lunch, and call it a day.

Instead, something happened that completely changed my plans for the store.

We wandered into a game booth.

We picked up one game.

Then another.

Then another.

Before I knew it, we were laughing so hard people walking by were stopping to see what was going on.

We started challenging each other.

Trash talking (the fun kind).

Celebrating wins.

Demanding rematches.

Trying to convince each other we were "totally robbed."

It wasn't forced.

It wasn't awkward.

It wasn't me begging my almost-12-year-old to spend time with me.

He was completely engaged.

So much so...

We went back the next day just to play more games.

Not because we had to.

Because we wanted to.

And that's when it hit me.

This.

This is what family connection can look like.

Not another lecture.

Not another "put your phone down."

Not making screen-free time feel like a punishment.

Just...

Fun.

That's How the Doodlebugs Family Game Night Collection Was Born

Every single game in this collection reminds me of those moments with Karson.

They're the games that made us laugh.

The games that made us compete.

The games that made us forget to check our phones.

The games that made us stay longer than we planned.

Those are the only games I wanted to bring home to you.

Because I think every family deserves moments like that.

The Secret?

Don't Tell Them It's "Family Bonding."

Seriously.

If I had walked up to Karson and said,

"Hey buddy, let's put our phones away and work on strengthening our family connection..."

...I'm pretty sure I would've gotten the look.

But if I hand him a game and say,

"Bet I can beat you..."

Now I've got his attention.

And before either of us realizes it...

We're talking.

Laughing.

High-fiving.

Making inside jokes.

Creating memories.

That's the magic.

The connection happens naturally.

"We Don't Have Time"

I hear this all the time.

And honestly?

I get it.

Life is busy.

Between appointments, homework, practices, work, dinner, and laundry, it feels impossible to squeeze in one more thing.

That's another reason I fell in love with these games.

Many of them take less than five minutes for a round.

Five.

Minutes.

Sometimes that's all it takes to change the mood in your house.

And if your family is anything like mine...

One round somehow turns into:

"Okay...one more."

"Best two out of three."

"No fair!"

"Let's play again!"

Those five minutes suddenly become thirty.

Not because anyone made them.

Because no one wanted to stop.

The Moments They'll Remember

Years from now, I don't think my kids will remember what I made for dinner on a random Tuesday.

They probably won't remember whether the laundry got folded that night.

But I do think they'll remember laughing until their stomach hurt because Mom accidentally threw a burrito at the wrong person.

Or Dad couldn't stop laughing long enough to finish his turn.

Or their sibling finally beat everyone after trying all night.

Those are the memories I want to create.

The ones that remind my kids that home is a place where they're loved, accepted, and always welcome around the table.

From My Family to Yours

The Doodlebugs Family Game Night Collection isn't just another collection of games.

It's a collection of opportunities.

Opportunities to reconnect.

To laugh.

To unplug.

To build traditions your kids will actually look forward to.

Especially now, as the back-to-school season begins and routines settle back into place, I hope you'll make room for one more thing on the calendar:

Family Game Night.

Not because you have to.

Because one day, you'll be grateful you did.

And if your kids complain before you start?

Don't worry.

Give it one round.

I have a feeling they'll be asking,

"Can we play just one more?"

...before the night is over.

And honestly?

That's exactly what happened with us.
