The "Empty Cup" Survival Guide: 50 Ways for Mamas to Recharge

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: You can’t pour from an empty cup.

As mamas, the second that first baby arrives, something shifts. Suddenly, your own most basic needs—like actually eating a meal or getting five minutes of peace—get tossed on the back burner. It’s wild how one tiny human can completely wreck your ability to take care of yourself! Then that newborn turns into a toddler who is into everything, and before you know it, you’re managing a preschooler who is just self-sufficient enough to be dangerous. The needs just keep coming.

I totally get it. I know you don’t have "extra" time. Taking a second for yourself can feel like an indulgence or even an inconvenience when the to-do list is a mile long. But I’m here to remind you that you matter too. You are so incredibly strong, but to keep showing up for everyone else, you have to recharge your own batteries. Since time is a hot commodity, I’ve rounded up some ideas to help you reset—many that take less than 5 minutes.

The Quick Reset {Under 25 Minutes}

  • Crack open a cold Alani: Sometimes that first sip is the best part of the day.

  • The "Solo" Bathroom Break: Lock the door. No audiences allowed.

  • Stretch it out: Five minutes to move your body can un-stick a stressful morning.

  • Blast your hype song: Put on something upbeat and have a 3-minute kitchen dance party.

  • Step outside: Take five deep breaths of fresh air. It’s a total sensory reset.

  • The 3-minute meditation: Use the Calm app just to find your center again.

  • Write it down: Jot down three things you’re grateful for. It helps shift the perspective when things feel heavy.

  • Quick Pamper: A face mask or a fresh coat of lip gloss can make you feel like a human again.

  • Cuddle a pet: If you have a furry friend, those few minutes of quiet connection are the best.

  • Wine o'clock: If the day has been that long... I'm not judging the clock! 🍷

The "Deep Breath" {1-2 Hours}

  • The Long Shower: Use the good soap. Don't rush.

  • Target Wander: Grab a drink and walk the aisles aimlessly (the best kind of therapy).

  • Drive & Sing: Go for a drive, roll the windows down, and blast your favorite music.

  • Get lost in a book: Lay in bed and read something that isn't a board book.

  • Listen to a podcast: Find something that makes you laugh or teaches you something new.

  • Call a friend: A real conversation with another adult can be a lifesaver.

  • Mindless TV: Zone out with a show that doesn't require any deep thinking.

  • Get creative: Bake something yummy (and eat it!), paint, or journal.

The "Total Soul Fill" {Half-Day}

  • Professional Pampering: A massage, a facial, or a mani/pedi.

  • The Movie Theater: Go see a movie in the dark where no one can ask you for a snack.

  • Get outside: Go for a real hike or a long walk in nature.

  • Date Night or Girls' Night: Get out of the house and remember who you are outside of "Mama."

You’re doing a great job, even on the days when it doesn’t feel like it. Take a beat for yourself today—you’ve definitely earned it.
