Spring is Coming: Navigating the Sensory "Season Shift"

I can always tell when spring is around the corner—and it isn’t by looking at the thermometer or even the first buds on the trees. For me, the first "alert" of the season is actually my son, Kirk.

Because of his chronic brain condition, Kirk is like a human barometer. As the barometric pressure shifts with the spring weather, his entire system shifts, too. In my house, comfort isn't just a "nice to have"—it’s a medical necessity. It’s about more than just the right clothes; it’s about layering in his treatments and therapies into a day when he already feels like he can’t handle a single thing more.

When the weather starts to "thaw," we have to move slowly. Here is how I’m helping my crew navigate the sensory season shift this year.

1. The "Human Barometer" & The Power of the Bridge

When the pressure changes and Kirk is feeling the physical weight of that shift, the last thing he needs is the "shock" of cold spring air on bare skin. He needs to feel protected.

  • My Strategy: We don’t go straight from winter coats to tank tops. We use lightweight bamboo long-sleeves as a "bridge." They provide that full-coverage security Kirk needs to feel grounded, but they’re breathable enough for a 60-degree day. It’s a way to give his body a "hug" while his brain is working overtime to adjust to the season.

2. Ditching the "Clunk" for Sweet-Scented Steps

Rainy spring days usually mean clunky, stiff rubber boots—which are a sensory nightmare. They’re heavy, they don't bend, and they can make a child feel "stuck."

  • The Doodlebugs Way: Instead of the stiff stuff, I look for brands like Mini Melissa. They make boots that actually shape to their feet as they wear them, so they feel like a part of the foot rather than a weight attached to it. Plus, they have that signature strawberry or vanilla scent. When Kira is starting to feel overwhelmed, sometimes that little pop of a sweet smell is just enough to help her re-focus and find a moment of "fun" in the middle of a transition.

3. "Trial Runs" & Brain Speed

Kira is so incredibly smart, but during these season shifts, her brain moves faster than her body can keep up with. If we try to rush out the door in a new spring outfit, she melts down because she just can't process it all.

  • The Routine: We do "low-stakes" trial runs at home. We’ll try on the new spring headbands or shoes on a Saturday afternoon. If a headband is a fraction too tight, we find out then—not when we’re already five minutes late for a party.

4. Choosing Quality Over "Fixes"

I used to spend my time trying to "patch" itchy grommets or cover scratchy zippers with tape, but I’ve learned that my time (and my kids' comfort) is worth more than that. Now, I focus on finding high-quality pieces that have those sensory modifications built-in from the start.

  • My Go-To’s: I look for brands like Magnetic Me, which replaces frustrating buttons and zippers with magnetic closures, or Appaman, which prioritizes the kind of fit and fabric that doesn't require "fixing." When the clothes are designed with the child’s nervous system in mind, it’s one less battle I have to fight.

We’re Learning the Language Together

Every spring, I have to remind myself that we are all just recalibrating. Whether it’s navigating Kirk’s medical needs through a pressure change or helping Kira bridge the gap between her fast-moving brain and a tight pair of shoes, we’re doing it together.

If you’re feeling the "spring jitters" at your house, know that I’m right there with you. We’ll find the right rhythm—and the right fabrics—one day at a time.
