How to Wash Squishmallows in the Washing Machine (Without Losing Their Squish!)

If your kiddo’s favorite Squishmallow has been dragged through the playground, snuggled at bedtime, or even spilled on during snack time—don’t worry! These soft, cuddly friends are machine washable with just a little extra care. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to keep them fresh, clean, and fluffy without ruining their signature squish.

Step 1: Pre-Treat Stains

Before tossing your Squishmallow in the washer, spot clean any tough stains.

  • Use a stain remover spray or an OxyClean solution.

  • Gently scrub the stained areas with a soft brush or cloth.

  • Wipe with baby wipes or a damp towel to lift away residue.

Step 2: Protect With a Bag or Pillowcase

Squishmallows need a little extra protection in the wash. Place yours inside:

  • A mesh laundry bag

  • A pillowcase tied at the end

  • Or, for larger Squishmallows, wrap in a flat bedsheet and knot the corners.

This keeps the fabric safe from snagging and helps your plush keep its shape.

Step 3: Load the Washer (But Keep It Solo)

Place your protected Squishmallow into the washer. For best results, avoid adding clothes or heavy fabrics.
Pro tip: Toss in some lightweight bedding (like sheets) to prevent the toy from flattening during the cycle.

Step 4: Add Mild Detergent

Stick to a gentle, fragrance-free detergent. Harsh chemicals can break down the softness or irritate sensitive skin.

Step 5: Select the Right Cycle

This step is key! The wrong settings can damage your Squishmallow’s plush material.

  • Wash Type: Delicate/Gentle

  • Soil Level: Normal

  • Spin Speed: Low

  • Water Temperature: Cold only

🚫 Never use hot water! Heat can cause the plush fabric to lose its softness or even melt slightly.

Step 6: Run the Cycle and Dry

Once the wash is complete, remove your Squishmallow. You can dry it in two safe ways:

  • Air Dry: Clip to a drying rack and let it dry naturally. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade colors and stiffen the fabric.

  • Low Heat Tumble Dry: If using the dryer, select Delicate/Lowest Heat. Even better, use a tumble-only (no heat) setting if your machine has one.

Step 7: Fluff It Up!

Once clean and dry, it’s time to bring back the squish factor:

  • Toss your Squishmallow in the dryer on the Air Fluff setting for 10 minutes.

  • Or simply give it some hugs and squeezes until it’s back in shape.

Note: Some Squishmallows may look a little flat after washing, but don’t worry! A few squeezes will usually restore their cuddly charm.
